Commercials

Television commercials are by far one of the most expensive ways for a company to advertise. That being the case it is suprising to me how many company's put out horrible commercials. Here's some examples:

Car commercials show a car driving on an excessively windy road and have some silly tag line to imply that driving that car will some how free you from the restriction of the roads you drive on everyday. Or they show a truck pulling an airplane on a balance beam over a canyon or something ridiculous like that. The only car commercial I can say I like are the VW ones, the ones where they show a car accident were pretty attention grabbing, but they also had a series of humorous ones that ran before those that I enjoyed.

Cell phone commercials are either really horrible or pretty good. They have some funny ones out but there are so many of them that as soon as I realize its a cell phone commercial I tend to tune it out.

Trade schools and various "career colleges" have some of the absolute worse commercials ever, and they are basically lying to people. They will show a girl that is a medical assistant and have her say that she loves her job and she is working her way up. I'm curious as to what a medical assistant works her way up to. It's not like she can just all of a sudden get promoted to a nurse or something.

Financial services, credit cards, and banks advertise frequently but there is always that feeling that they aren't telling you all the details and that if you do business with them you would end up getting screwed somehow. Despite this preconceived feeling they pretty much always advertise the same way.

I primarily like commercials that are funny. So now that its football season I love the coors light beer commercials where they dub some football/coors fans into press conferences with NFL coaches. I also like the Xaiser Permanente commercials because they creatively promote health and wellness. One of my all time favorites is the nextel commercial where they three guys are in an office dancing to the song "push it" by Salt n Pepa and they other guy comes in all frantic only to find out that Nextel has enabled these guys to take care of all their logistics easily, thus they can cue the music again and resume dancing.

I'm sure you all see plenty of commercials, let me know what ones you like and don't like, if you have an idea for a commercial feel free to post that here as well, I promise I won't steal your idea.

Jonathan,

I like funny commercials too. And I like ones with catchy music. The new Ipod commercial is fun, and I wanted to download the song they used. I also like Target's commercials because they are always to catchy music and the images have lots of color and move fast. One of my favorite commercials is the Verizon one where the guy with the "network" meets a mobster out in the middle of nowhere, and the mobster says "I told you to come alone" and then starts asking if he gets service down by the docks, because he does a lot of "business" down there. That's funny. Some of the old milk commercials were funny, like the guy who confesses his wife's diamond is fake. I don't like the new milk commercials with people trying to sneak in and steal milk. I think they are stupid. And I think the cavemen commercials are stupid too. Around Christmas time Hallmark usually has good commercials where they tell a whole touching story in just minutes and sometimes make me cry I get so involved! I'm tired of car commercials. That is a huge expensive item. Do people really buy a car because they saw a commercial on TV? I guess they must, or they'd stop making them. I do like catchy lines too, like "Zoom Zoom" but right now I can't think of which car that is, so is it really a good line? The Superbowl gets a lot of hype for it's commercials, but the last few years there haven't been any great ones. No really good ones since the frogs did Bud-wies-er. So...some I enjoy, but usually I just want to get back to my show! Oh, one more thought. It really irritates me when they have a 20 year old beautiful girl advertising anti wrinkle creams! If the cream is so good-use a 50 year old woman to show it! And not some super model who has been beautifu all her life! In that respect, the Dove commercials and the Weight Watcher commercials are good, using more real looking people. That's my 2 cents!

I think Macy's has come out with some great commercials -- one of my all time favorrites was a few years ago at Christmas time with the lady who runs and slides under the door to get out before the store closes. They had another really good one recently, too.
I agree that the funny commercials are the ones that I like best, although I think the commercials that try to make a statement about their product impress me the most. For example, the VW commercials that were "stereotyping" their own clients as outdoorsy/sporting types were pretty funny. If I ever see a Kaiser commercial on I will stop flipping and watch it. I especially liked the one that showed the library open 24 hours a day and all the bikes riding on the freeway.
(I also like the "dropped call" commercials.)

I do not like the commericals for cell phone texting. I do not like the style of communicating that is simply saying the first letter of a word. I think it is because I cannot translate quick enough.

I cannot stand the viagra commericals. I always feel annoyed
when I watch them. I think men take viagra for the sex benefit and women apparently for the romance at least this is what the commericals imply. The man takes a pill and then he and the woman travel, go to the beach or company drops by this must be very annoying to the guy. Maybe this is why there is a possible four hour erection.

I like funny commericals, that make me laugh and those that have a catchy tune, like the new ipod.
